I had a similar issue twice on my 91tt. 1st time cruising in parking lot on a warm nite the car shut down and all the gauge cluster lights came on. The car had electrical power but just would not "Crank-Over" and start. Finally got it started 30-min later after eng had cooled down.2nd time it happened was during a hot day sitting in bump to bumper traffic, again same problem as above. Replace new style ptu with a spare and problem seems to have gone away. Try carrying a spray bottle with ice cold water in a cooler with you and if problem occurs again spray the ptu to cool it down and see if you can get the car started right away.
